Dr. Idelfonso Nogueira Joins the Heritage Science Laboratory Ljubljana

Dr. Idelfonso Bessa dos Reis Nogueira, expert in artificial intelligence and process systems engineering, is joining the Heritage Science Laboratory Ljubljana (HSLL). Dr. Nogueira is Associate Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, where he leads research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, systems optimization, digitalization, and automation. At HSLL, he will work within the framework of a part-time appointment.

Dr. Nogueira is the author of the AiP₂S₂ concept (Artificial Intelligence-powered Products, Processes, Scales, and Systems), which integrates four key areas for the development of new, sustainable industrial solutions. His research includes the use of artificial intelligence in scent reconstruction, opening new opportunities both in cultural heritage preservation and in industry. Together with colleagues, he leads the European project SCENTinel, which examines the impact of climate change on olfactory heritage and develops innovative methods for its preservation.

Prof. Dr. Matija Strlič, Head of the Laboratory, stated:
“While we’ve been collaborating intensively with Prof. Dr. Nogueira for many years, his part/time engagement with the HSLL opens a new chapter. He brings new expertise that is crucial for the success of heritage science, as well as analytical chemistry and material characterization, in the coming decade.”

Having authored 80 scientific papers, Dr. Nogueira is one of the leading researchers in his field, with his work cited more than 1,000 times. At the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, University of Ljubljana, he will contribute to the development of research in artificial intelligence for analytical processes and strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration at the international level. We look forward to his contributions and the scientific breakthroughs his work will enable.
