Expert Meeting on the Degradation of Weighted Silk Objects in Heritage Collections

We are announcing the upcoming Expert Meeting 2: The Degradation of Weighted Silk Objects in Heritage Collections, which will take place on March 24–25, 2025, at the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum in Ljubljana. This event is part of the SAFESILK research project, a WEAVE initiative funded by FWO and ARIS, and is jointly organized by the University of Antwerp (ARCHES) and the University of Ljubljana (FKKT).

This interdisciplinary meeting will bring together researchers, conservators, and heritage professionals to discuss the challenges of preserving historical salt-treated silk fabrics. The program includes expert lectures, case studies, and discussions on the production, trade, degradation, and conservation of weighted silk. Participants will also have the opportunity to explore the National Museum of Slovenia during a guided tour and take part in an interactive workshop on silk degradation nomenclature.

The event will feature leading researchers in the field, including Prof. Matija Strlič (University of Ljubljana) and Prof. Geert Van der Snickt (University of Antwerp), along with specialists in textile conservation, material science, and analytical chemistry.
