Professor Dr Mojca Ramšak gave a remarkable lecture on Slovenian olfactory heritage during the recent conference on the institutionalisation of intangible cultural heritage. The event took place on 22 and 23 November 2024 at the Museum “House of the Halubje Bell Ringers” in Viškovo, Croatia.
The town of Viškovo is home to four UNESCO-protected elements of intangible cultural heritage. The museum was the venue for expert discussions on the preservation and development of cultural traditions. Professor Ramšak presented her extensive research and findings on Slovenia’s rich olfactory heritage, recently published in the book Antropologija vonja under the auspices of UNESCO, which was translated into English as The Anthropology of Smell in 2024. Her presentation underlined the importance of preserving and documenting unique olfactory cultural practises and made an important contribution to the broader academic discourse on cultural preservation and ethnological and anthropological studies.
