The documentation of heritage objects throughout the conservation process is essential for safeguarding their preservation and integrity. Precisely recording details of the colour of an object, morphological characteristics, and material composition, along with accurate measurements, is crucial comprehensive condition assessment and effective conservation treatments.

Among the diverse range of documentation techniques in use by conservators-restorers, photographic and microscopic documentation stands out as readily accessible.

This workshop will be on 15. 2. 2023 at 9 am in Conference room (Dekanat) at the Faculty of chemistry and chemical technology, University of Ljubljana, and is designed for conservators-restorer with foundational knowledge in technical photography and microscopy to enable effective documentation in daily conservation work.

The topics will cover:

  • core principles of photography
  • camera functionalities, exposure, composition, lighting, macro techniques
  • microscopy: image capture, processing, and practical applications.

The participants will have the opportunity to engage in theoretical and practical applications of photography and microscopy. The lecturer will showcase advanced camera gear and a customized motorized portable microscope tailored for the cultural heritage field. The workshop is suitable for conservators-restorers regardless of prior knowledge of photography or microscopy.

The demonstrated equipment is made available through the Slovenian node of E-RIHS (European research infrastructure for heritage science) and is accessible for use at UL FKKT.

Duration: 5 hours
