Digital technology is increasingly reshaping the ways we understand, study, preserve, and present cultural heritage. But does digitalisation merely create new opportunities, or does it also bring new responsibilities and challenges for the conservation-restoration profession?
The event Digital Transformation: Opportunities and Challenges for the Conservation-Restoration Profession, taking place on 17 June 2026 at 10:00 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (+MSUM), Maistrova ulica 3, Ljubljana, will bring together postgraduate students of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, University of Ljubljana, and their mentors to discuss some of the most pressing questions of heritage in the digital age.
The discussion will explore the growing digitalisation of the heritage sector and its impact on museums, galleries, and audiences, while also addressing issues of sustainability, ethics, digital preservation, and the future of conservation-restoration practice. Special attention will be given to how digital tools are transforming the ways cultural heritage is researched, documented, and interpreted.
The event welcomes students, researchers, professionals, and all cultural heritage enthusiasts interested in the intersection of the humanities, natural sciences, and emerging technologies. Together, we will examine how digital transformation is changing not only the tools we use, but also our understanding of heritage and the evolving role of the profession.
Event partners: Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (+MSUM), Academy of Fine Arts and Design, University of Ljubljana (ALUO), GreenHer Centre of Excellence, and the Ljubljana Heritage Science Laboratory at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, University of Ljubljana.
